A Look At How Former Barnstormers Fared In Affiliated Ball This Season
There are nine former Barnstormers who completed the 2009 season in affiliated ball, including four – Jason Perry, Josh Hall, Jon Huber and Tom Cochran – who were signed during this season. Let’s take a look at where they went and how they fared:
Jason Perry: The outfielder was picked up by the Tampa Bay Rays just nine games into the season and was sent to Double-A Montgomery. Perry batted .204 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 32 games while battling through a wrist injury that sidelined him for 2½ months. He smashed six homers and drove in 15 runs during his brief stay in Lancaster.
Josh Hall: The Barnstormers’ opening day starter only appeared in three games before being signed by the Seattle Mariners and sent to Triple-A Tacoma. Hall went 2-1 with a 6.91 ERA in eight games in Triple-A before landing on the disabled list. The righthander ended the season on a rehab assignment in the Arizona League, where he pitched five scoreless innings. He was 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA for Lancaster.
Jon Huber: The reliever started the season as the Barnstormers’ setup man, complementing closer Ryan Cullen. He was signed by the Atlanta Braves in June and sent to Triple-A Gwinnett County. Huber appeared in 27 games for the Braves, finishing 4-0 with a 4.25 ERA and one save. He posted a 3.63 ERA while with Lancaster.
Tom Cochran: The left-handed pitcher came to the Barnstormers as a non-roster invitee in spring training and enjoyed a rapid career rise. Cochran was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in May and sent to Double-A Carolina. It was the first time he reached Double-A in his seven-year career. The starter/reliever went 4-6 with a 3.18 ERA in 17 appearances for Carolina before being promoted to Triple-A Louisville. He was 1-0 with a 3.07 ERA at that level.
Jason Bowers: The shortstop was the anchor of the Barnstormers’ infield during their run to the 2006 championship. That was his last season in independent ball. Bowers spent this season as a utility man with the Tampa Bay Rays at Double-A Montgomery. He batted .233 with three homers and 27 RBIs in 98 games split between shortstop, second base and third base.
Scott Patterson: The relief pitcher remains the only player to reach the major leagues after playing for the Barnstormers. Patterson, who started the first game in the history of Clipper Magazine Stadium, split time with the San Diego Padres at Triple-A Portland and the Oakland A’s at Triple-A Sacramento. Patterson was 3-3 with a 4.25 ERA at Portland before being traded to the A’s. He was 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA for Sacramento. The righthander appeared in four games in the majors with the Yankees and Padres in 2008.
Brian Stavisky: The outfielder/first baseman spent the entire season with the Phillies at Double-A Reading, where he batted .279 with 11 homers and 66 RBIs. Stavisky was with the Barnstormers for 29 games in 2008 before being picked up by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Eric Crozier: The outfielder/first baseman started the year with the Atlantic League’s Southern Maryland Blue Crabs before being scooped up by the Baltimore Orioles and assigned to Double-A Bowie. He batted .217 with 10 homers and 34 RBIs in 64 games for Bowie. Crozier was a key member of the Barnstormers’ 2006 championship team. His inside-the-park homer in Game 2 of the first-round playoff series against Atlantic City vaulted the Barnstormers into the championship round.
Ian Bladergroen: The first baseman was signed by the Seattle Mariners last winter and split his time between High-A High Desert and Single-A Clinton. Bladergroen batted .264 with 11 homers and 46 RBIs in 79 games for High Desert and .230 with no homers and 14 RBIs in 25 games for Clinton. He was a member of the Barnstormers for the entire 2008 season.
