Saturday, July 26, 2008 Game Time: 7:05 p.m. HERR SINGLE PULLS OUT THRILLER Jordan Herr, the youngest member of the Barnstormers roster and professional baseball rookie, singled home the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth as Lancaster upended the Newark Bears, 10-9, Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The win was Lancaster’s third straight and put the club in sole possession of first place in the Freedom Division with an 8-7 record. Trailing, 9-8, entering the bottom of the ninth, the Barnstormers got a leadoff single from Manny Mejia, after the Lancaster catcher had struck out on his first four at bats of the game. Lloyd Turner bunted Mejia to second with the tying run, and the Bears had Frank Rodriguez (0-1) intentionally walk Ivanon Coffie to fill in first base. Jutt Hileman singled under the glove of first baseman Tim Sweeney to load the bases bringing up Herr. The Barnstormers’ right fielder became the hometown hero with his ground single into left field. The Bears had taken the lead off reliever Judd Songster in the top of the ninth. Pinch hitter Vic Gutierrez looped a single into right and scooted to third as Ramon Nivar found the hole on the right side with a ground ball base hit. Ramon Castro launched his 12th home run of the season into the screen in right center for a 9-8 lead. Ruben Mateo and Coffie exchanged solo homers in the second inning, and Turner slugged a three-run homer into right center for a 4-1 Lancaster lead. That edge slipped away in the fifth as Nick Renault loaded the bases on a single and two walks before leaving. Sendy Rleal came on in relief and induced a ground ball out of Nivar, but the ball skipped away from Coffie as two runs scored on the error. Castro followed with a grounder into the hole at short. Danny Gonzalez made a desperation throw to second for a force play and fired the ball down the right field line. Mike Just came across with the tying run, but Nivar, attempting to score the winning run slid behind Mejia’s tag but also missed the plate. Mejia went back to apply the tag to keep the game tied. Back-to-back doubles by Turner and Coffie gave Lancaster a 5-4 lead in the sixth, and Coffie’s second two-bagger of the night, a shot off the top of the right field wall with two outs in the seventh, put Lancaster up, 7-4. Mateo’s second homer of the night, on Songster’s first pitch, cut the Lancaster lead to 7-6 in the top of the eighth. Ian Bladergroen’s double inside the first base bag extended the edge back to two in the bottom of the inning. Paul Thorp (1-1) got the final two outs in the top of the ninth on a line drive double play to earn the win. NOTES: Matt LeCroy tied the franchise record, hitting safely in his 18th straight game, with singles in the third and seventh innings…Herr is 4-for-5 with the bases loaded…Turner has six extra-base hits in the last six games; Coffie has six in his last four…Mike Woods extended a hitting streak to seven with a single in the eighth inning…He also stole his league-leading 25th base of the season…The winning streak is the second longest of the season for Lancaster and one short of the season-high, set in June…Lancaster will try to sweep a series for the first time all season on Sunday evening at 6:05…Shane Youman (3-2) will make the start for Lancaster against Jose Garcia (4-2).
